Ah the lore – scientific myths
I rarely use the term “breakthrough”, [Merton footnotes in his case-study of Kuhn, The Sociology of Science, An Episodic Memoir, note 46 p. 123] but it invariably brings to mind the jesting observation by the economist and polymath Kenneth Boulding intended to capture the intellectual excitement of the first year of the Center’s [Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences] existence: Fellows would greet one another not with a “Good morning,” “Hi,” or even “Grüss Gott,” but with a simple “Any breakthrough today?”.
